YGCTO Episode 29b - Bat-Man Begins
Time Traveling Through Topics
In real time, Dre and I are two recordings into the next topic already. It’s a completely different genre without a plot to cover. So far, it seems like I underestimated the amount of time we would spend talking on each episode.
We end up spending about half of the recording interviewing the guest before getting into the main topic. I’m actually really happy with this. My favorite part of the show isn’t even exploring the topic, it’s getting to know a guest through their view of the topic.
Dre and I were recently having a conversation about experiencing something you don’t enjoy yourself. Dre’s view is that he likes seeing that there’s a large fandom for something that he doesn’t necessarily “get”. That just means that there is an audience out there that appreciates it - thereby giving it value.
Transmetropolitan and Podcast Guesting
I mentioned my guest spot on Atif’s podcast Sus Stories last week. I brought Transmetropolitan to him knowing its reputation. Listen to the episode for the full story, but it used to be one of my favorite books.
It’s from the Era of Edgelords in the late 90’s where nihilism and sarcasm was king. In retrospect, the humor feels juvenile. The main character is a flawed white male protagonist that never changes and is only proven right by the story. Still, there is some breathtaking artwork and ideas that were not done as much in comics of the time. It felt like a breath of fresh air from Superheroes.
So when the writer was revealed as a sex pest, it really made the book hard to go back to. In real life, Warren Ellis was grooming his assistants into sex - to reduce it as simple as can be. And it was bad and real. If you’re interested in the full story, please visit the aptly named somanyofus.com where his victims formed a collective website to call him out.
