A Year of Shows

Dre and I seem to have slipped into some sort of coma. As I wake up, I realize that we have somehow released 50 episodes of this show. Granted, Dre may not count the minisides - but damnit, those are still editing work!

My biggest discovery this past year is how key the guests are to this show. We’ve had many talented, artistic guests on this show. I’m glad Dre and I have kept so many people around in our lives that want to do this with us.

My most unexpected part of having guests on the show is that I’d be podcasting with several people that I’ve been listening to for years. First was David Bell from the Gamefully Unemployed network. Then Logan Trent and John Reinman. This week, we get to present two more experienced podcasters both of us listen to.

This Week’s Guests

This week’s guests are Adam Tod Brown and Jeff May. Together, they help us finish our coverage of Babylon 5 with the series finale “Sleeping In Light”

Adam Tod Brown runs the “You Don’t Even like…” podcast network. Check out his shows at youdontevenlike.com

Jeff May has several shows on Patreon, patreon.com/jeffmay - including Nerd! with Dre Alvarez.

Jeff May should need no introduction to most of our listeners. He’s part of the show’s origin as we’re a spinoff of the Nerd! show. And for listeners that don’t come from Nerd!, you’ve probably heard us mention Jeff with the show’s inception.

To be fair, Jeff has nothing directly to do with our show… unless you count embedding himself deep in Dre’s psyche before our recordings. However, for some reason Jeff let Dre plug our show directly in his Patreon feed. That alone makes him the show’s largest donor. At least until we can get Galactus to pony up.

I’ve been listening to Adam Tod Brown since he started his Unpopular Opinion podcast. He wrote a weekly Cracked column to go with the podcast. This put the unholy idea in my head that I had to write accompanying articles for each podcast. As revenge, I made him watch the final episode of Babylon 5.

Recording with people you listen to and learn from is intimidating. I’m not a comedian. I’m not much of a talker. Jeff and Adam are pros who were never at a loss for words. Even about this nothing of a finale. The great part though is that recording with professionals is an excellent way to improve. And make an interesting show while at it.

There were several times on this one where Jeff or Adam interrupted the flow to take the discussion to a better place. They both do it naturally after many years of podcasting and hosting. In the moment, I felt like I let myself down by not saying more… but listening back to this one for editing gave me a new perspective. Jeff did a lot of the talking… but so did Dre and I. Adam clearly had almost zip to say about the episode and still managed to say something engaging each time he spoke.

I’ll have to think about how to improve my speaking and timing. At fifty episodes, I’m just getting started to release these. But I’m at a good point to figure out what I can do to improve my part of the show. After this season, we’ll be tweaking the show quite a bit. The next couple seasons will be way shorter than the B5 season. Which makes sense. We needed this time to fully cover Babylon 5 in a way that didn’t consume five years of our lives. One year is a worthwhile compromise. I look forward to seeing where we go next.
